Town of Cambridge speakers at the April General Meeting Ross FarlekasManager Infrastructure, Parks and Stevan Rodic Manager Planning & Development will talk about how the Town is trying to maintain its green and leafy character. All residents and ratepayers welcome.

West Leederville Planning Study proposals

Information sessions have been scheduled for Saturday 4 April and Saturday 18 April from 8.30am-12pm at the Leederville Town Hall, 84 Cambridge Street, West Leederville. The Town’s planning consultants & staff will be there to answer questions on the proposed scenarios. You should already have received a brochure &feedback form in your letterbox (all West Leederville not just the study area). There have also been ads in the newspaper, a display at the library, a brochure stand at Coles and website info at www.cambridge.wa.gov.au/planning/stratproj/wlpuds. Closing date for feedback on the proposals is 24 April.

Community Choir for Christmas at Lake Monger

A specially formed community choir will lead carol singing at the Christmas at the Lake Monger community event on Wed 3 Dec 5-8pm.

One further rehearsal will be held with the band on Monday 1 December. Meet at 6.30 at St Cecilia's and travel together to Willagee.

Cleanup at Lake Monger Cancelled!

Because of the recent rains the water level at Lake Monger is considerably higher than usual for this time of the year. Consequently the clean-up planned for Saturday 19 April has been cancelled.

Sausage Sizzle Still On

The Wembley West Leederville Residents Association still plans to hold a sausage sizzle on the same day between 10.30am and 1.00pm near the wishing well next to the south-west car park and community members are invited to come and join in.

In 2009 we propose to hold the clean-up a bit earlier in the year!

What’s happening about the Lake Monger Reserve Management Plan - what are the proposals for change? How can you have a say about them?

The Association’s second Lake Monger Clean-up on Saturday 19 April 2008. After the fantastic work of community members in May 2007, the Association has been talking to the Town of Cambridge and the Malubillai Wildlife Carers Network about what more needs to be done this year.

Town of Cambridge is developing a Master Plan for the Pat Goodridge Precinct (on the eastern side of Selby Street between Salvado Road and Hay Street) - which includes the Matthews Netball Centre and carpark, and the old City of Perth (plant) nursery land. The old nursery land has lain bare for many years and residents hold a variety of views about what should or should not be done with it. The Association has previously raised this issue the Town. The nursery land is evidently held jointly by the City of Perth and the Town of Cambridge following the creation of the Town of Cambridge out of the old City of Perth in 1995.

Christmas at Lake Monger 5 December 2007

In 2006 the Wembley West Leederville Residents Association approached the Town of Cambridge to offer a community sausage sizzle at the traditional turning on of the Christmas tree lights event at the Lake. The Town of Cambridge subsequently involved the WWLRA and other community groups in planning for the 2007 event. A new activity for this year brought together local singers for a community choir to lead carols.

WWLRA teamed up with the West Leederville Residents Association and arrived at the Lake on Wednesday 5 December to set up 3 BBQs, 600 rolls and sausages. Alas, the weather gods were not with us. The sky darkened and the wind whipped up from the west. But showing true community spirit we persisted, turning sausages and tofu burgers in our rain gear!

Unfortunately the event had to be abandoned about 7pm as another cold front was imminent.
But don'y worry. We'll be there again next year!

Thanks to members who turned up to help, the West Leederville Residents Association and the Town of Cambridge - and the many residents who braved the weather and helped eat some of our sausages. Anyone need 400 sausages for a BBQ?

Lake Monger Cleanup 12 May 2007 9am -12 noon

About 50 committed Lake Monger lovers cleared mountains of rocks, bricks and rubble from most of the lake's shoreline along Lake Monger Drive. This will prevent further infected injury to the black swans feet.

Young and old, locals as well as those from further afar. One family came from Forrestfield. Some dropped in for an hour or so; others stayed the duration. It is amazing what we can achieve together!

Afterwards we celebrated our achievement with a BBQ.

Community Picnic on Sunday 1 April 2007

A good crowd of all ages showed up at Lake Monger, wearing their April Fools Day hats. There were BBQ bangers, balloons, butterfly kite-making, footies and soccer. Thanks to all those who helped organise this event and those who just came along!

J B O’Reilly’s Tavern - Extended Trading Permits

The Council of the Town of Cambridge is seeking community views on JB O’Reilly’s Tavern carpark being used as a drinking area- when sporting and other events are held at Subiaco Oval - through the issue of extended trading permits. JB O'Reilly's Tavern is at 99 Cambridge Street, West Leederville.

The Council intends to develop a long term approach to applications and wants to know what residents think. A short questionnaire has been distributed to approximately 600 residents in the surrounding area. Further information is available on the Town’s website at

Weed Alert! Caltrop

At a recent meeting resident Margaret Park informed residents and ratepayers to be on the lookout for a very invasive weed called Tribulus terrestris (also commonly known as caltrop, cat-head, puncture vine).

It looks a bit like "double double gee". Margaret showed us a relatively small one she had collected on a vacant block in Wembley. It was huge! If you spot it contact John Bell at the Town of Cambridge on 9285 3129.

"This (pest) plant is a prostrate annual with (rows of opposing) leaves, yellow flowers less than 1cm across and very spiny fruits. This plant is a cosmopolitan weed, and forms of it may be native to Western Australia or introduced prior to European settlement. It is widespread in the Kimberley and arid zone, and is spreading along roadsides in the south-west. " (Western Weeds)

Disposal

The Department of Agriculture advises that residents should dispose of Caltrop plants and seeds by bagging it and including it in their normal rubbish collection (in this way it will be deep buried and unable to survive).
